Arabic Sayings from Egypt and Other Countries
He who is scalded by the soup blows on the yogurt. They said to the mule, ‘’Who is your father?’’ He said, ‘’The horse is my uncle.’’ Every moustache has its scissors. If you cannot be a lighthouse, at least be a candle. More than 100 proverbs from Egypt and other countries of the Arab world make up this entertaining collection of popular wisdom wittily illustrated by the cartoonist Kathryn Lamb. A book to browse through, smile at, and learn from, Unload Your Own Donkey provides a lighthearted insight into the Arabic language and the culture of the lands where it is spoken. Each saying appears in Arabic, with a transliteration to help with pronunciation. The literal meaning in English is then given, followed by the nearest equivalent saying in English. And, like honey on top of cream, many of the proverbs are given extra shape by humorous illustrations. Everyone favors a different eggplant, but everyone will enjoy this book! Available in the same series: The Son of a Duck is a Floater Apricots Tomorrow Primrose Arnander lived in the Middle East for twelve years.
